How do you turn generational differences from a source of workplace friction into an advantage for collaboration and performance?
This was the challenge faced by TBTD, the sole distributor of PMI tobacco products in Egypt. Operating across 21 locations with more than 600 employees, the organization manages nationwide sales and distribution in a demanding and fast-moving business environment.
Multiple generations were working side by side across the sales organization, bringing different expectations, communication styles, and approaches to decision-making. These differences were increasingly affecting everyday collaboration, alignment, and effectiveness.
At the same time, following a long pause in face-to-face learning, TBTD wanted to restart employee development with an experience that felt relevant, credible, and energizing.
The challenge was not simply to explain generational diversity. It was to create a psychologically safe learning environment where participants could explore sensitive issues without blaming, stereotyping, or separating different age groups.
To address this, TBTD partnered with DEVELOR to design a fully customized generational diversity workshop built around real workplace situations and the Egyptian business and cultural context.
The joint journey included:
- Designing the program from scratch for the local market and organizational environment
- Bringing together different generations, roles, and seniority levels in mixed learning groups
- Exploring how generational differences influence communication, feedback, expectations, and decision-making
- Creating a shared language for discussing differences without labels or defensiveness
- Practicing constructive approaches to sensitive topics such as stereotypes and micromanagement
- Using real workplace situations instead of relying on abstract generational theory
- Building psychological safety so that every generation can contribute equally
The results:
- More open, calm, and constructive conversations across generations
- Greater confidence in addressing sensitive topics without escalation
- Visible improvement in collaboration between different age groups
- Stronger trust and cohesion across the sales organization
- A shared language for discussing generational differences
- Continued use of the workshop’s tools and concepts months after the program
- Improved alignment, decision-making, and day-to-day sales effectiveness
